The advent of hybrid working for many roles has brought huge challenges not only regarding the organisation and management of workflows and deliverables but because of the nature of working at a distance. Many employees now feel more isolated than ever so it is no surprise that due to a breakdown in support communities, more and more professionals are experiencing burn-out. The figures are shocking and speak for themselves.
Prevalence of Burnout: Over half of the workforce, specifically 52% of employees, reported feeling burned out, showing a significant increase in burnout rates, particularly among younger workers.

Burnout Across Generations: Millennials are the most burned-out generation, with 59% experiencing symptoms of burnout. Gen Zers have an even sharper rise, going from 47% to 58% in just one year.

Impact on Health and Productivity: Burnout leads to numerous negative outcomes, including 77% of workers experiencing some level of burnout, which correlates with a decline in productivity, higher absenteeism, and increased healthcare costs. This is estimated to cost the U.S. economy more than $500 billion due to workplace stress.

So, we have to act, that is clear. But how and what can be done at a local level inside of companies to reduce this and turn the situation around? Managing stress in the modern workplace is essential for maintaining employee health, productivity, and overall job satisfaction. Here are three effective strategies:
- Define your ideal flow: Through flexible working hours, employees can adjust their start and end times or have the option to work from home. This can help them manage personal responsibilities more effectively, reducing the stress of balancing work with family or personal life.
Ensure that employees take their vacation days and consider implementing policies for mental health days. A French tech company called Algolia has what they call a ‘Wellness Day’ one Friday per month where they allow their employees to take a day off for themselves to focus on anything other than work. It is very popular with the team as it allows them to disconnect to reconnect.

Set limits on overtime and ensure that if it’s necessary, it’s compensated appropriately. This helps prevent burnout by ensuring employees aren’t consistently working excessive hours.
- Creating a Supportive Work Environment: Foster an environment where employees feel comfortable discussing their stress levels with managers or HR. Regular check-ins or anonymous surveys can help identify issues early. Office Vibe is a tool which can help ‘take the temperature’ inside of your company and identify areas to improve including well-being.
Promote a culture of collaboration rather than competition. Team-building activities can improve relationships, making the workplace feel more like a community where support is readily available. It’s great to see the yearly ‘offsite’ initiatives returning to companies. These events federate the team, strengthen the culture and are the seeds of many conversations for years to come and they should not be underestimated when it comes to creating a workplace this attractive to all.
Implement wellness initiatives like stress management workshops, meditation sessions, yoga classes, or even simple activities like providing quiet spaces for relaxation during breaks. Access to counseling services or Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) can also be invaluable.

- Task and Time Management Techniques: Ensure that workloads are manageable and deadlines are realistic. Overloading employees with work can lead to chronic stress. Use project management tools to distribute tasks evenly.
How about offering training on time management, prioritization, and effective stress handling techniques? Skills like mindfulness, deep-breathing exercises, or even basic organizational skills can also make a significant difference. It’s down to imagination and asking your employees what they’d appreciate the most and then listening and acting on it!
Finally, promote the importance of taking regular breaks. Short, frequent breaks have been shown to restore focus, increase productivity, and reduce fatigue. Techniques like the Pomodoro Technique can be taught to structure work and rest periods effectively.
A lot of stress in the workplace comes from inefficient time management by a variety of stakeholders and this also keys into our energy because this isn’t infinite so we need to use it wisely. We will cover this fascinating topic in a future article.
So, there you have it. Have a go at implementing these strategies to not only help in reducing stress but also to contribute to a more engaged and healthier workforce.
Each organization might need to tailor these suggestions to fit their specific corporate culture and employee needs but that’s all part of the journey towards a better world. Surely, that’s a great journey to be on and the reason businesses exist to create a better world. Good luck!
