The person is focused on studying and getting his work done – despite many interruptions and inviting distractions. He is able to control himself to continue to work without giving in to temptation. This level of self-control means that he is able to manage his emotions to concentrate on what he has to do in order to get his work done. This means that it doesn’t pile up or cause problems for him in the future.

This image is very similar to the image “Self Management” used with adults in business. The adult card talks about goals which has less meaning in education. The focus is on passing exams and getting grades so the questions have been modified to account for this. Also, the person has been made to look a lot younger and with the addition of siblings that add to distractions.
Examples of questions you might use when coaching children and teenagers around self-management.
– How important is it for you to pass your exams and get the grades that you need?
– What helps you to concentrate on getting your school work done?
– What helps you to focus on getting your grades? – What would happen if you don’t get the results that you are looking for? How would this make you feel?
– How do you cope with everything going on around you and all those attractive distractions – your friends, your family, your cat or dog, the television, social media, etc.?
– What helps you to concentrate on getting your work done?
– How much do you motivate and drive yourself?
– How much are you pushed by your parents, teachers, friends and family?
